With a surface area of 342,000 km², the Republic of Congo has a population of around 5,000,000, unevenly distributed across the country. Most of the population lives in the country's two main cities, Brazzaville, the capital, and Pointe-Noire.
Its port on the Atlantic Ocean makes the Congo a gateway to Central Africa, while its dynamic demography makes it a young and enterprising country , with over 58% of its inhabitants under the age of 25.

The national economy was initially heavily dependent on oil. The Congo is the third largest producer of oil in Africa with 330,000 barrels/day. The government has launched an ambitious economic diversification program in recent years, reflected in the adoption in 2022 of the new National Development Plan (NDP), which defines the stages of a multi-sector, inclusive growth model.

After a number of difficult years, notably caused by exogenous shocks such as the fall in oil prices and the Covid-19 pandemic, Congo has managed to return to growth, and is now aiming to achieve over 4% of GDP by 2023Meanwhile, the country's restructuring plans and sound public finance management have led to a reduction in its external debt and an improvement in its sustainability. This improvement has resulted in anassessment of its creditworthiness and a rating upgrade by the rating agencies.

Ideally located at the heart of Africa's Atlantic seaboard, the Republic of the Congo offers major investment opportunities, not only in its own right, but also as a gateway to the regional market.

Sustainability policy

The Republic of Congo has over 22 million hectares of forest, representing around 65% of its territory and the third-largest forest area in Africa. It therefore faces the dual challenge of encouraging responsible logging as a factor in development, while at the same time protecting this heritage and biodiversity. As a result, the regulatory framework has been strengthened by the adoption of the new Forestry Code in 2020, which includes the creation of a production-sharing contract, a ban on the export of raw logs and the introduction of a national forest certification system. Developing the carbon economy has also been identified as a way of enhancing the value of this sector.

Three Basins Summit

As a follow-up to the first summit on this subject, held in Brazzaville in 2011, the Republic of Congo hosted the second Three Basins Summit. From October 26 to 28, 2023, bringing together representatives from countries hosting the Congo, Borneo Mekong-Southeast Asia and Amazonian tropical forest areas. The Summit was held at the Centre International de Conférences du Grand Hôtel de Kintélé and welcomed over 3,000 participants, including 9 heads of state and representatives of governments, NGOs, international organizations, civil society and experts.

Furthermore, following the establishment of the Tree Day in 1984, the Three Basins Summit provides an opportunity for Congo to officially launch the Afforestation Decade to promote global reforestation efforts.

The Republic of the Congo also has a second major advantage when it comes to implementing its development strategy based on a green economy. With over 10 million hectares of arable land - equivalent to 31% of the country's surface area, but 90% of which is unexploited - it has a huge potential for undeniable leverage for growth, recognized as such by the government and public institutions. For this reason, responsible agricultural development aimed at the food self-sufficiency has been established as a priority axis of the economic diversification program.

Finally, in the fight against global warming , the Republic of Congo is a key player, due to its forested surface area and, above all, the significant presence of peat bogs in its soil. After the oceans, the Congo Basin is the planet's second largest carbon sink. In recognition of its vital role and historic commitment, it was in Oyo (Congo) that the Blue Fund Mechanism was launched in 2017 by the region's Heads of State, and that the President of the Republic was entrusted with the chairmanship of the Climate Commission.
